The University of Minnesota’s Digital Campus offers an online bachelor of science in accounting. Distance students in other programs can earn a minor in accounting online.
The program prepares students to work in public, private, and governmental accounting. Courses focus on the use of computer technology for accounting spreadsheets and functions; U.S. tax essentials; ethical decision making; communication and leadership skills; and financial and cost accounting skills. Students are also encouraged to commit to continuing professional development after graduation.
After completing the program, students have the ability to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certification examinations through the university. This allows students to sit for these exams after a four-year undergraduate degree instead of requiring a fifth year of schooling. Possible career roles for graduates include financial accountant, auditor, management accountant, and tax accountant.
Online classes at the University of Minnesota require students to be comfortable with technology, independent learners, and effective communicators. The school suggests a number of resources for online learners to improve their study and technology skills. This includes technology assistance, free training courses for Microsoft Office products, a mini course on overcoming procrastination habits, and assistance with time management.
